Cookie Policy

What Are Cookies

Cookies are small text files a website stores on your device. Browser "local storage" is a similar place where a site can keep a setting. Some of these are needed for the site to work; others are optional and are only used with your consent.

1. Strictly Necessary Storage

These are required for the site to work and remember your choices. They collect no personal information.

  • cookie-consent (local storage), stores your cookie choice so we do not ask again on every visit.
  • theme (local storage), remembers your light or dark mode preference.
  • __cf_bm, cf_clearance (cookies), may be set by Cloudflare, our hosting provider, to tell people from automated traffic and to pass security checks.

Convenience storage. rc-recent-compares (local storage) keeps the last five comparisons you opened so the compare page can list them for you. The site works without it, it is never sent to the site, and it is kept whatever cookie choice you make. You can clear it on the compare page.

2. Analytics Cookies

These are set only with your consent. They help us understand how visitors use ReligionCompare so we can improve it.

  • _ga, _ga_*, set by Google Analytics 4 to tell visits and sessions apart. Kept for up to 14 months. Google cookie details.

Before you choose, and if you decline, Google Analytics runs in "consent mode" without cookies and receives only limited, cookieless signals for aggregate reporting. The site also keeps its own cookieless usage records, described in the Privacy Policy.

3. Advertising Cookies

Ads are currently switched off on ReligionCompare, so no advertising cookies are set. The site is prepared for Google AdSense; if ads are switched on, this page will be updated first and advertising cookies (such as Google's __gads, __gpi, IDE, and NID) will be set only with your consent. Links to Amazon are affiliate links; Amazon may set cookies on its own site when you click through.

4. How We Obtain Consent

When you first visit ReligionCompare, a cookie banner appears. You can choose Accept All, Reject Non-Essential (only the strictly necessary and convenience storage above is used), or Customize to switch analytics and advertising on or off separately. Optional cookies are not set until you consent.

5. Changing or Withdrawing Consent

You can change or withdraw your choice at any time by clicking Cookie settings in the site footer, which reopens the preferences panel. You can also delete cookies and site data through your browser settings:

  • Chrome: Settings, Privacy and security, Cookies
  • Firefox: Settings, Privacy & Security, Cookies
  • Safari: Preferences, Privacy, Manage Website Data
  • Edge: Settings, Cookies and site permissions

Clearing site data also clears your theme and consent choices, so the banner will appear again.
